What is soft-touch lamination?

Soft-touch lamination is a matte film with a distinctive velvety, almost suede-like surface. It is chosen for how it feels rather than how it looks — the tactile quality is what makes people describe a pack as expensive before they have consciously looked at it.

Almost every other decision in print is visual. This one is not. Soft-touch works through touch, and the response to it is immediate and largely unconscious: people pick a soft-touch pack up and hold it for longer. That is why it dominates cosmetics, fragrance, premium spirits and high-end gifting.

Visually it behaves like a deep matte — colours sit slightly flatter still than under standard matte film, and dark colours in particular gain a richness that is hard to achieve any other way. It pairs exceptionally well with spot UV and with foil, where the contrast between the velvety background and a sharp gloss or metallic element is the entire design idea.

The costs are real. It is the most expensive of the common laminating films. It marks more readily than standard matte, so fingerprints and scuffs show clearly and dark soft-touch packs genuinely need an anti-scuff specification. And because the surface is textured at a microscopic level, very fine type loses a little crispness compared with gloss.

It is worth paying for where the pack is part of the product experience and will be handled by the customer. It is worth nothing at all on something that goes straight into a cupboard, and it is the wrong choice on anything that has to be written on.
