Finishing

What is aqueous coating?

Aqueous coating is a water-based protective coating applied inline on press and dried with heat and air. It is the lightest of the common protective finishes: it stops ink smudging and rubbing, adds a little sheen, and is available in food-contact-suitable formulations.

Because it is water-based rather than solvent-based it dries quickly, has very little odour, and is straightforward from an environmental and handling point of view. It is applied as part of the printing pass rather than as a separate operation, so it adds almost nothing to the lead time and very little to the cost.

Its main job is protection during production rather than a visual effect. Heavy ink coverage takes time to dry properly, and unprotected sheets stacked while still setting will mark each other. A flood of aqueous coating seals the surface so the job can be handled, die-cut, folded and packed without scuffing. On a lot of commercial work it is applied as a matter of course and never appears on the quote as a feature.

It comes in gloss, satin and matte, though none of them reaches the level of a laminated film — the sheen is subtle. It does not add physical strength, and it will not stop a fold cracking.

The food-contact point is the one worth flagging. Formulations exist that are suitable for food packaging applications, and where a pack has any food-contact requirement the coating specification is something to agree explicitly with the supplier — alongside the board and the ink system — rather than assume.
