What is gloss lamination?
Gloss lamination bonds a thin, clear, shiny plastic film to the printed sheet under heat and pressure. It makes colours look deeper and more saturated, adds real physical strength, and resists moisture and scuffing better than any varnish.
The film does two things at once. Optically, it puts a smooth reflective layer over the ink so light bounces off cleanly instead of scattering — which is why colours under gloss lamination look richer than the same ink unlaminated. Physically, it is a plastic skin that takes the abrasion instead of the print.
That durability is the practical argument for it. A gloss-laminated carton survives a courier network, a retail shelf and repeated handling with far fewer marks than an uncoated or varnished one. It also resists moisture, which matters for food packaging and for anything stored in a humid climate.
It hides handling marks better than matte does, which is the quiet reason a lot of high-volume retail packaging uses it. Fingerprints and light scuffs disappear against a reflective surface and are obvious against a matte one.
The reasons to choose something else are aesthetic and practical. Gloss can read as inexpensive at premium price points, where matte or soft-touch signals more. It reflects strongly under retail lighting, which can make a photograph hard to see from some angles. And it cannot be written on with most pens — a real consideration on anything that needs a signature, a date or a handwritten note.
